Awakening - Persian Traditional and Sacred Dance

Join us at the Denman Island Community Hall for an inspiring evening of dance performances and Sema aka sufi whirling with international touring dance artist and scholar Farima Berenji.

The evening will start with Persian traditional and sacred dances by Farima, Simorgh Dance Collective (Farima’s international dance project with a performance group based here in the Comox Valley) as well as, performances by dancers attending the Awakening` Seven Persian Goddesses retreat. Following the dance performances, with Farima’s guidance we will learn personal and spiritual Sema (Sufi Whirling) as well as other turning practices, while listening to sacred poetry and music.

Off islanders, this event is timed so that you can catch the last ferry leaving Denman Isl. for Buckley Bay at 10:40 and the Community Hall is walking distance to the ferry.

* Those that wish to participate in the Sema Gathering following the performances are encouraged to wear white or light coloured clothing and, socks or soft soled shoes are recommended for whirling.

Farima travels worldwide to perform and teach dance and wellness. Her passion for dance and history has led her on an extraordinary life-long journey throughout the world, from her home countries Iran and Azerbaijan to other neighbouring Silk Road countries such as Armenia, Kurdistan, and Turkey.

Farima is strongly connected to spirituality and healing under the guidance and teachings of Mevlana Order Sufi master and dervish Dr. Rahmi Oruç Güvenç of Turkey. She hopes to guide people to the historic beauty and richness of the Silk Road culture and to help people find their inner bliss through dance, music, and sacred healing.
