All over the island
Around the first week in March the Pacific Herring (Clupea pallasii) will gather to spawn in our local waters and tens of thousands of birds will be arriving for the feast, as well as sea lions and other mammals, including Homo sapiens! This internationally significant spectacle is something special for islanders and for the ecology of the whole West Coast. If you want to see nature in the wild this is the place to be! Watch Carol Hunter’s wonderful video of the 2015 herring run then come and stand on the beach and be awed by this spectacular annual event.
