Stories Under The Stars - The Denman Island Stardust Festival

This first-time festival of live and original audio dramas and comedies with music promises a thrilling and unique experience. The program will be presented on an outdoor stage set in the beautiful 40 acres of the Flowing Art Studio farm, under a sky of shooting stars on three, moonless warm summer evenings at the height of the Perseid Meteor Shower.

Presented by a live cast of 25 players over three evenings, this festival is a partial fundraiser for Denman Conservancy and senior’s affordable housing.

Let the sound of the players’ voices put wings to your ears and let your imagination carry you off to far away lands.

BROKEN ANGEL: Friday August 10 at 8 PM

Debuted last year to full houses, Broken Angel is the inspiring story of a stricken and forgotten woman who uses the amazing transformational power of song to reach out, find and reconnect with her loved ones. In her journey she is helped by nine intriguing characters including  a detective, a nun, a Phd musicologist, a murderess, and a therapist. A love story weaves through the play. Written and directed by Dante Ambriel, the play is woven around nine songs presented by Denman’s own Blues Master, Scotty Donaldson with singer Deneen Baldwin.

ABRACADABRA: Saturday August 11 at 8 PM

This romantic comedy, written and directed by Dante Ambriel, is about the power of love to conquer all. A magical, musical romantic romp through Hollywood follows a fifteen year old as he tries to get his famous but  estranged parents back together. Meet an opera prima donna, a psychic countess, a producer, a New York theater director, a sexy  starlet, and a magical singing demon who comes to Earth to find true love. All’s well that ends well in this playful satire about life and love in Hollywood. Seven songs will be performed live on stage with piano by the amazing Peter Clark.

These short plays are all written by playwrights living on Denman Island:

The Woman Who Does Laundry by Lorraine Martinuik is a haunting tale on two women living with their families on an isolated farm in BC.

The Visitor by Dawn Stofer, is a tender comedy about a sudden visitor who humorously disrupts the quiet life of an eccentric island resident.

Home by Mike White is a stunning monologue about displacement from an immigrant’s perspective and the concept of home inspired by the riveting poem “Home” by Warsan Shire.

At Home with the Trumps by Bill Engleson is an outrageous comedy disclosing the inner and outer mind-workings of Donald Trump and his inner circle.
